Images of the crucifixion of Jesus, also known as the Passion, are common in Christian churches and around the Easter holiday. Some people wear a small cross with Jesus on it as a pendant.
That the execution of Jesus is a historical fact is corroborated by several non-Christian sources, including letters from the first century, the Jewish historian Josephus's Antiquities of the Jews, the Babylonian Talmud, and The Annals by the Roman historian Tacitus.

The "t" shape common in depictions of Christ impaled is likely derived from symbols important to pre-Christian religions. Crosses can be found in prehistoric art and ancient artifacts from around the world. It resembles the Egyptian ankh, the European sun wheel, and was used as a sign of the god Tammuz in Chaldea.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing Jesus on the Cross
1. Begin by drawing a narrow, vertical rectangle using straight lines.
2. Draw a narrow horizontal rectangle at a perpendicular angle to the first, forming the shape of the cross.
3. Sketch Jesus's face (see an easy face drawing tutorial), erasing as necessary. Use curved lines to outline the head, draw the hair, detail the face, and form the crown of thorns.
4. Next, use curved lines to form his shoulder, the sides of the torso, and the contours of the abdominal and chest muscles. Erase as necessary.
5. Use curved lines to draw the garment around his hips. Enclose two irregular shapes, one larger than the other, using a series of overlapping curved lines.
6. Extend pairs of curved lines from the shoulders to form the arms. Notice the contours, how the lines are closer together at the elbows and the wrists. Then, use short, curved lines to sketch the hands and fingers.
7. Extend a long, curved line from the garment, and double it back upon itself to form the leg and foot. Notice how the lines are closer together at the knee and ankle. Draw a circular shape on top of the foot to indicate the nail. Use short lines to differentiate the toes.
8. Erase lines as necessary.
9. Use curved lines to draw the remaining leg and foot. The foot of this leg should be partially hidden by the other. Use short, curved lines to contour the knees and the muscles of the legs.
